What You Should Do If You Have A Skin Infection

A skin infection can present in a few different ways. Usually a skin infection presents as a bump of some sort on the skin, with the infection beneath the skin, or it could present as an open wound that has gotten infected and is not healing properly. If you have a skin infection, or an infected wound, you need to have it taken care of and treated properly to prevent it from worsening and needing a more extensive type of treatment, such as having some of the skin and tissue removed. If you have a skin infection, read on for what you can do to help treat it.

Keep It Open

You may think that covering it up is a better choice to prevent anything else from getting to the skin, but you need to actually get some air to the area. Keeping it covered may add moisture and could potentially make the skin infection worse and spread further. Keep the area covered when out in public, but when you are at home, open it up to the air and allow some fresh air to get to it to help prevent moisture and bacteria from forming.

Apply Anti-Bacterial Ointment

Applying an anti-bacterial ointment such as Neosporin to the infected area can help keep it clean and can help kill the infection. Apply it to the skin that appears to be infected and allow the ointment to do its work. Apply the anti-bacterial ointment after you shower and the area has been cleaned thoroughly.

Clean With Soap And Warm Water

Be sure you are cleaning the infected area with soap and water. Use bar soap that doesn't contain fragrance, lotions, or anything else that can be harmful to your skin. If need be, clean this area when the infection initially presents, and again when you come home and have access to more supplies.

Visit The Dermatologist

If the skin infection isn't healing or it is worsening, you need to go to the dermatologist for proper treatment. Sometimes an over-the-counter antibiotic may be necessary in order to help heal the skin infection. You may also need a stronger prescription medicated ointment to help clear up the infection.

If you have a skin infection, it may present as an oozing sore or as patch of skin that is hot to the touch. You need to have it treated properly before it worsens. Make an appointment with a dermatologist for help treating this type of skin condition.
